Nairobi Community Centre

Nairobi Community Centre is a dedicated group of five individuals from various slums in Kenya, including Kibera and Githurai. Their mission revolves around creating a better community by providing assistance to vulnerable children, women, and men through a range of initiatives, including garbage collection, mentorship, and a community feeding program.

Their story is rooted in a shared commitment to uplifting their community, starting with the establishment of a safe and clean environment for all residents. With diverse backgrounds and a common vision, they embarked on a journey to improve their community's cleanliness and empower the youth.

Their flagship initiative, the "Community-led Waste Conversion Project," operates within the slums of Nairobi. At its core, this project harnesses the remarkable potential of the Community Cooker—a revolutionary device that reimagines the concept of zero waste. This innovative technology is capable of transforming non-recyclable waste materials from low-income areas into energy. Operating at temperatures between 800 to 1200 degrees Celsius and boasting an impressive 95% combustion efficiency rate, the Community Cooker is a safe and sustainable outdoor stove.

What sets this project apart is its emphasis on local youth empowerment. The Community Cooker is managed and operated by these young individuals, who receive essential training in waste management and acquire valuable skills for future employment opportunities. This approach not only benefits the environment but also provides these youths with a pathway to personal growth and economic security.

One of the project's remarkable achievements is the production of 3200 meals every week. These nutritious meals are distributed to 320 children attending a Community Outreach School, ensuring food security for families in need. The impact of this initiative is far-reaching, instigating a positive shift in behavior and fostering a sense of ownership within the community.

The ultimate goal of the organisation is to cultivate cleaner and healthier communities, empower the youth to seize brighter futures, and contribute to food security for local families. Through their unwavering dedication, they are not only cleaning up their neighbourhoods but also sowing the seeds of lasting social and environmental transformation.
