Hekima

Hekima is a non-profit organisation operating in the Northwestern region of the United Republic of Tanzania, along the southwestern shores of Lake Victoria. In this remote locale, they work tirelessly alongside dedicated colleagues and volunteers to bring positive change to the lives of the most vulnerable children and adolescents.

Situated in the rural community of Bukoba, this small yet impactful organisation focuses its efforts on empowering children and young people who grapple with the harsh realities of abuse, poverty, and exclusion. Hekima dedicates its energies to family strengthening, alternative child care, support for teenage girls, and intervention for children living on the streets. Their ultimate goal is to alleviate the often unbearable living conditions faced by their beneficiaries. The organization operates in close collaboration with local schools, social welfare officers, and fellow NGOs to maximize their impact.

At the heart of their mission is the drive to combat poverty and injustice. Through a multifaceted approach, Hekima initiates a range of projects aimed at improving the livelihoods of street children and young youth. They equip them with soft and technical skills, providing opportunities for professions like handcraft activities and business skills. This not only enhances their employability but also facilitates their return to school and reintegration with families and shelters. Literacy lessons are offered to those who lack basic reading and writing skills, further broadening their horizons.

The organisation also fosters artistic expression through activities like talent shows, where children and young youth showcase their musical performances and athletic abilities. Collaboration with various organisations, companies, communities, and individuals creates an enabling environment for apprenticeships, talent development, and skills enhancement.

One significant facet of their work is building children's homes and classrooms to improve the living conditions and educational prospects of their beneficiaries. The organization is actively involved in supporting street youth in their transition from street life to productive skills, providing guidance on funding, project proposal development, and business planning.

Their dedication extends to schools, where they establish children's clubs that teach students how to report abuse incidents, understand their rights, and reduce violence within families and between teachers and students. Hekima believes in nurturing children's awareness of their rights, protection, and the importance of reporting any abusive incidents they encounter.

Through their unwavering efforts, Hekima is resolute in protecting the rights and privileges of children with no one else to turn to. They are a beacon of hope, empowering vulnerable youth to transcend their circumstances and forge a brighter future.
