Skyrian Sanctuary

Skyrian Sanctuary is a heartfelt and entirely non-profit project devoted to the ethical training, welfare, conservation, and educational efforts surrounding the critically endangered Skyrian pony. Situated on the rugged yet picturesque island of Skyros, this project has been a beacon of hope for these remarkable creatures.

At the heart of the sanctuary lies a passionate commitment to the well-being of a 35-strong herd of Skyrian small ponies. These ponies, renowned for their charisma, exceptional intelligence, and friendly nature, range in age from 2 to 32 years old, with 10 among them being rescues.

In addition to the pony companions, this harmonious sanctuary also welcomes 15 rescued feral cats, 3 larger rescue ponies, 2 dogs (including one rescue), 1 rescue goat, and a lively community of chickens.

The sanctuary embarked on its mission in 2006 and, since 2009, has had the privilege of hosting over 300 dedicated volunteers. These volunteers play an indispensable role in safeguarding and nurturing the critically endangered Skyrian small horse, ensuring their legacy endures for generations to come.
